Rohwer Concentration Camp

Located in Desha County, Arkansas, West of the Mississippi River. Opened September 18, 1942, as the Rohwer War Relocation Center. At its peak, Rohwer held around 8,475 incarcerees, mainly from Los Angeles and San Joaquin Counties, CA. Nearly 900 Nisei from Rohwer would serve in the armed forces. Rohwer would finally close on November 30, 1944.

Born on December 28, 1921, in Los Angeles, California, Takashi was one of four Senzaki children. His mother and father both worked in Grand Central Market, in downtown Los Angeles. While entering the workforce after high school, the war broke out, and Takashi and his family were sent to Santa Anita Temporary Detention Center before being moved to Rohwer. While at Jerome, Takashi volunteered to join the army and was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He would serve in the Champagne Campaign, also serving in the liberation of Biffontaine, Bruyeres, and Belmont, which included the Rescue of the Lost Battalion.

Rohwer Soldier Roster

Research through the Valor in Confinement project enabled GFBNEC to build a list Japanese American soldiers who served from the ten War Relocation Authority confinement sites during WWII. These soldiers were recruited out of the concentration camp and/or had direct family incarcerated in the camp. List periodically updated.
