Jerome Concentration Camp

Located in Chicot and Drew Counties, Arkansas, north of the Mississippi River. Opened October 6, 1942, as the Jerome War Relocation Center. At its peak, Jerome held around 8,497 incarcerees, mainly from Los Angeles, Fresno, and Sacramento, CA. A small number of Japanese Amerians from Hawaii were also incarcerated at Jerome. Around 700 Nisei from Jerome would serve in the armed forces. Jerome would finally close in June 1944.

Born on November 2, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, Sam Ozaki was one of six children. His family lived in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, where his father was a fertilizer salesman. Before he began to plan out his college life, the war broke out and Sam and his family were sent to Santa Anita Temporary Detention Center before being moved to Jerome. While at Jerome, Sam volunteered to join the army and was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He would serve in the Apennines and Po Valley Campaign.

Jerome Soldier Roster

Research through the Valor in Confinement project enabled GFBNEC to build a list Japanese American soldiers who served from the ten War Relocation Authority confinement sites during WWII. These soldiers were recruited out of the concentration camp and/or had direct family incarcerated in the camp. List periodically updated.
