Jimmy Shigemi Kono was born on August 21, 1922, in Los Angeles, California, one of two children. The family lived in Azusa, in East LA, and Jimmy would travel to LA for work. When the war broke out, Jimmy and his family were sent to the Pomona Temporary Detention Center before being moved to Heart Mountain. Jimmy’s older brother would volunteer for the 442nd, something that Jimmy also wanted to do in time. But before he volunteered, he would be drafted instead. He would be assigned to the 100th Infantry Battalion. He would serve in Italy, where he would be assigned to help guard POWs and support the rest of the regiment, as well as spending time with his brother.
