Join Us in Wishing LA City Councilwoman Jan Perry Happy Birthday

Friends and supporters hosted a birthday party and fundraiser for Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Little Tokyo on July 21, 2010 and Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC) was well represented. Councilwoman Perry has served the Los Angeles area that includes Little Tokyo and the Go For Broke Monument for nine years. Time after time, she has supported our community, celebrated Japanese American traditions and honored our history. She is a long-time friend to GFBNEC, our veteran volunteers, our staff and board. Among those attending the event on behalf of the GFBNEC Board of Directors were Chairman Michael Ozawa and members Paul Abe, Ken Akune, Tets Asato, George Nakano, Cathy Tanaka and Gary Yamauchi. GFBNEC Board of Governor representatives included film and television star George Takei, businessman Brad Altman, businesswoman Frances Hashimoto, who not only gave out delicious manju but also was an event organizer, and 100th/442nd veteran James Ogawa. MIS veteran Jim Murata with wife Emi Murata, who is a tireless GFBNEC volunteer, friends and supporters Minabi and Sumi Hirasaki, and long-time public relations consultant Mary Graybill attended the event as well.

Go For Broke Exhibit at Ellis Island Immigration Museum to be Dedicated

A full itinerary is planned for the Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 dedication of the Go For Broke: Japanese American Soldiers Fighting on Two Fronts exhibit at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum that is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in New York. World War II Nisei veterans who attend the dedication program will be introduced and George Takei, a member of the GFBNEC Board of Governors, will be master of ceremonies. There's also a special showing of 442: Live with Honor, Die with Dignity scheduled for 2 pm. The exhibit traces the history of Japanese American soldiers during World War II, including stories of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 522nd Field Artillery and Military Intelligence Service (MIS). The exhibit was created by the Japanese American Wartime History Project and curated by Eric Saul, former director of the Presidio Army Museum and creator of the 1980 Go For Broke exhibit. It opened on July 6, 2010 and will be open every day all summer long. For hours and ferry schedules, call the Statue of Liberty National Monument at 212-363-3200 or visit the National Park Service's website for Ellis Island at http://www.nps.gov/elis

Thanks to GFBNEC Volunteers, Farewell to Volunteer Coordinator

Approximately 50 GFBNEC volunteers joined staff for lunch at our offices on July 26. We kept the taco truck busy and pretended no one was on a diet as we enjoyed a selection of desserts, treats and games. We had a great time as we thanked volunteers for all of the hard work and bid farewell to volunteer coordinator Jennifer Yoshitake. Again, to all of our volunteers, including those who could not be our guests for lunch, thank you. GFBNEC could not do all that we do without you. And Jennifer, we wish you the best and want you to know that we'll miss you.
