Veterans Day weekend concert to honor Nisei

A concert honoring the Nisei will take place on Nov. 12 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

The Great Nisei Reunion III will feature the Harry James Orchestra, the Modernaires, the Island Crooners and "the Songbird of Manzanar."

According to Stonebridge Productions, the Great Nisei Reunion III is the final in a series of nostalgic big band concerts honoring the Nisei. The first one was held at the Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo in 2014, with the second one in La Mirada in 2015.

Producer Gerald Ishibashi said that the series is very close to his heart.

"My mom was a huge big band fan," Ishibashi said. "When I first started producing shows, I hired many of her favorite performers like Andy Russell, Connie Haines, Tex Beneke and others ... it made her so happy, because like so many other Nisei, my mom said that music was like a magic tonic to get them through the oft times oppressive camp days."

"The Songbird of Manzanar," Mary Kageyama Nomura, is also Ishibashi's mother-in-law.

"[She] is still going strong at 92 years young and will be a guest vocalist with the Harry James Orchestra," he said. "This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many Sansei, Yonsei and even Gosei to share a life experience with their Nisei parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. It is going to be a great show."

Go For Broke National Education Center will have a booth at the concert. The booth will feature items for sale from our new GFBNEC/ Japangeles clothing line, as well as promote GFBNEC.

The concert will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Redondo Beach.

Premier orchestra seats are $45 and gold premium orchestra seats are $60. Tickets are available at https://www.purplepass.com/index.php#162974/Ishibashi_Entertainment/Foxhole_Buddy,_Inc.-Great_Nisei_Reunion_III-Redondo_Beach_Performing_Arts_Center-November-12-2017.html or 800-316-8559.
