Stars and Stripes, Day and Night!
"We can finally fly the flag again at night," was echoed repeatedly by the veterans who were at the Go For Broke Monument as installation of new well lights surrounding the Monument was completed just prior to the Los Angeles Regional Congressional Gold Medal Celebration.
"When I came on board at GFBNEC, one of the first things I noticed was that the Go For Broke Monument was starting to show its age," said GFBNEC President Don Nose.
"Of special concern to our veterans was the need to replace the deteriorating well lights. So last summer we launched our Monument En{LIGHT}en campaign to replace the aging well light fixtures that surround the monument.
"We are so grateful to our community for their generous support of this endeavor. We raised the $35,000 we needed to replace all of the well lights that surround the Monument."
To top it off (literally), Robi Shibao-Martin arranged to have the LA Fire Department bring a hook-and-ladder truck on Memorial Day to install "pigeons-not-welcomed-here" wires to the top of the flagpole.
It was a memorable Memorial Day, 2012.
