TAKE ACTION: SEND YOUR COMMENTS TO TEXAS BOARD OF ED NOW!

Go For Broke National Education Center is working with National Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), Houston JACL, and the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation to stop the revision of the Texas social studies curriculum standards. The revised standards would, as the New York Times wrote, "counter the idea that the internment of Japanese was motivated by racism" by lumping roughly 11,000 German Americans and 3,000-4,000 Italian Americans who were individually tried and interned during World War II together with the 120,000 Japanese Americans who were rounded up and imprisoned without benefit of trials.

Amendments to the state's curriculum standards will be posted on the Texas Education Agency website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index3.aspx?id=1156 and in the Texas register by mid-April for a 30-day public comment period. We urge you to email the Texas State Board of Education to oppose the proposed revisions to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills curriculum standards at sboeteks@tea.state.tx.us

The complete New York Times report is available at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/education/13texas.html and a series of response are posted at http://www.thefacultylounge.org/2010/03/why-the-new-texas-social-studies-curriculum-is-wrong-about-racism-and-japanese-american-internment.html
