After the Gothic Line, it was just go, go, go. It was no sleep, just kept going.
Interviewer: What were you guys doing?
Because see, as long as the infantry is moving, we have to keep moving, because we have to keep the supply lines open. So, if they went 15 miles, we have to go 15 miles. And, no matter what, we had to find a way to get it done.
And, our officers were good. Y'know, some of the things that they did, after thinking about it, made a lot of sense. Like, I can't remember when that was, but I remember that when we was going, a German had knocked out two bridges, quite a ways apart. And our officers decided to put the bypass right in the middle of the two bridge. You would think it would be a lot easier if they would try to go around right where the bridge was. Now, they were using their head. That night, the Germans shelled both bridges. They figured we'd be working on it. Hey, they were in the middle of it. See, because if you do that, you have to make a roadway to that, and you gotta come back, whereas, if you went right by the bridge, you just went straight across. But then, we probably wouldn't have made it because the Germans shelled it that night. They really shelled both bridges, bridge sites. So, you know, the officers are always thinking. Always thinking.
