Welcome to the eTorch! This is the Go For Broke Educational Foundation's first e-newsletter created to share all the exciting progress the Educational Foundation is making in the area of preservation and education of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service and others who served this country during World War II. In the editions to come, we will feature a WWII veteran and provide updates on all our educational initiatives, including oral histories, teacher training, resource center and Web site.

In this edition of eTorch, we introduce the story of 442nd veteran Hideo Takahashi who participated in the infamous battle of the Lost Battalion. Recognized as one of the 10 most significant battles of WWII, it was a watershed event for the 100th/442nd as it forced the nation to recognize Japanese Americans as patriotic and loyal citizens, though at an extremely high price. The 100th/442nd suffered tremendous casualties to save 211 Texans. This is a particularly sensitive topic for many WWII veterans, and we are very grateful Hideo and other veterans share their experiences to help us all appreciate their sacrifices.

We hope Hideo's story in some way helps you better understand the "go for broke" spirit. We encourage you to forward the eTorch to as many people as possible. The veterans are passing daily and their stories must be passed on. And, if you really like what we do, we encourage you to learn more at www.GoForBroke.org.

Sincerely,
Christine Sato-Yamazaki
Executive Director & President

For Private Hideo "Tak" Takahashi, Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 meant the end of his job as a U.S. Army cook. "They knocked me out of the kitchen because they thought I might poison the buddies," Takahashi said. As absurd as such treachery sounded, Takahashi turned in his apron, returned to being a foot soldier, and then went on to serve his country in one of the most decorated units in military history for its size and length of service - the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. In doing so, he received a Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, and several Presidential Unit Citations.
