GO FOR BROKE RECEIVES $100,000 FROM PAUL & HISAKO TERASAKI
(Torrance, Calif. – December 13, 2006) – The Go For Broke National Education Center has received a $100,000 gift from Paul and Hisako Terasaki to help further its efforts to preserve the story of the World War II Japanese American veterans, whose decorations and record of service is unparalleled in military history, it was announced today.
Dr. Terasaki is a noted researcher who served as Professor of Surgery at UCLA from 1969-99. In 1964, he developed the micro lympho-cytotoxicity test that was adopted in 1970 as the international standard method of tissue typing. He and his corporation, One Lambda, have played a central role in the development of tissue typing and transplantation surgery.
Born in Boyle Heights in 1929, he graduated from UCLA in 1950. He was interned at Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona during World War II.
In October the Terasakis met with Go For Broke's national spokesperson, former U.S. Army Chief-of-Staff General Eric K. Shinseki (Ret.), who explained the importance of preserving the Japanese American WWII veteran's story of patriotism and bravery for future generations. The Terasakis' gift will help sustain Go For Broke's Hanashi Oral History Program as it strives to reach its goal of completing 1,200 interviews by 2010.
"Paul and Hisako have been generous supporters of the Japanese American community and on behalf of the Go For Broke National Education Center we are extremely grateful for their generosity and support to ensure the story of the Japanese American WWII veterans lives on and is preserved for the future," said Executive Director and President Christine Sato-Yamazaki.
The Go For Broke National Education Center teaches and preserves the history and legacy of American veterans of Japanese ancestry whose heroism and sacrifices during World War II triumphed over racism and intolerance. In addition to the Hanashi Oral History Program, whose collection is one of the nation's largest, Go For Broke's programming includes An American Story Teacher Training Program, www.GoForBroke.org educational website, and Resource Center.
The 100th/442nd/MIS WWII Memorial Foundation was established in 1989 and built the Go For Broke Monument near Los Angeles' Civic Center as an eternal tribute to those who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service (MIS), and the many other men and women who served overseas during World War II.
