GO FOR BROKE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SEEKS
FACILITATORS FOR TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM
An American Story Workshops Ensure Our
Future Generations Understand the Significance of the Japanese
American World War II Experience
(TORRANCE, Calif., November 1, 2002) –
The Go For Broke Educational Foundation is seeking facilitators
to conduct its An American Story teacher training workshops in
California. This is an excellent opportunity for former educators
or historians knowledgeable in the Japanese American World War
II experience to ensure that the Nisei hardship and veteran legacy
is perpetuated. Qualified workshop facilitators will help assure
California educators are able to teach the significance of Japanese
American veterans in World War II and the constitutional issues
surrounding the forced relocation of Japanese Americans on the
West Coast. Two facilitator orientation sessiond will be held;
one on Saturday, December 7, 2002 and the other January 11, 2002,
from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Go For Broke Educational Foundation
office in Torrance.
The goal of the Go For Broke Educational Foundation Teacher Training
Program is to provide teachers in the state of California with
information and resources enabling them to include this American
story in their classroom instruction. Established in 1997, the
teacher training workshops seek to expose teachers and students
to the involvement of Japanese Americans in World War II. Funded
by the State of California and endorsed by the State Superintendent
of Public Instruction, workshops raise awareness of these issues
to future generations and to preserve the history of the Japanese
American war experience to ensure no one will ever be deprived
of their civil rights because of race again.
FACILITATORS NEEDED
Interested applicants should have a university degree and some
classroom experience as a teacher and/or extensive knowledge of
Japanese American history. Chosen facilitators will be conducting
workshops addressing a wide range of issues: U.S. history and
immigration, World War II relocation and incarceration, World
War II heroism and sacrifice, and post war resettlement and redress.
A background in these areas will be beneficial. Applicants should
also be advised that travel may be required on an as needed basis.
Individuals meeting these criteria will be interviewed and further
asked to participate in a second training session in January 2003.
All facilitators will receive compensation for each workshop conducted.
Reservations are required by December 2. To reserve a seat please
contact Helen Ota at 310-222-5711 or email helen@goforbroke.org.
The Go For Broke Educational Foundation is located at 370 Amapola
Avenue, Suite 110 in Torrance.
The Go For Broke Educational Foundation institutes educational
programs focused on the heroism and history of the Japanese American
soldiers of World War II, as well as the Japanese American evacuation
and incarceration and civil liberties issues raised by those events.
Currently the Foundation’s programs include An American
Story teacher training workshops and curriculum development, Hanashi:
Voice of the Nisei Soldier oral history program, and select media
projects, including producing “A Tradition of Honor”

In 1989 Japanese American World War II veterans established the
100th/442nd/MIS WWII Memorial Foundation to build the Go For Broke
Monument as an eternal tribute to the heroics of the segregated
Japanese American units: 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental
Combat Team, MIS (Military Intelligence Service) and the many
other men and women who served overseas during World War II. The
monument is located in downtown Los Angeles at Temple and Alameda
streets.
