Teachers' Workshop Looks at World War II from Hawaii Point of View Professional development opportunity set for Kahului, Maui Oct. 8 - 9
TORRANCE, CA (Aug. 19, 2010) – Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC), the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii and Nisei Veterans Memorial Center are working together to host Looking Like the Enemy: The Case of Japanese Americans in World War II. The workshop will cover World War II from the point of view of Hawaii's Japanese American and local communities and is scheduled Oct. 8 and 9, 2010 during fall break at Maui Waena Middle School and the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, Kahuilui, Hawaii. Teachers can register now on the GFBNEC website at www.goforbroke.org
Hawaii State DOE teachers can sign up for the workshop to earn DOE PD credits or to audit the course. Content includes a new curriculum especially developed for Hawaii's state standards for teaching World War II history. It follows the successful teacher training institute designed for Hawaii educators that was initiated in October 2009 by GFBNEC and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu.
In a follow-up note to GFBNEC teacher training workshop organizers, one teacher said, "I signed up to get the salary point and learned a lot. It changed the way I look at my surroundings and people of different ethnicities. I will share what I've learned with my students and my colleagues."
Among workshop highlights, veterans of the US Army's 100th, 442nd and MIS will give World War II history a real-life perspective by sharing their own personal stories. Presentations will provide an overview of the history of confinement sites in Hawaii and teachers will get field trip ideas along with classroom and community resources, and more. The new curriculum is being developed by Sean Uwaine and Leisha Bento, both Social Studies teachers at Aiea High School on Oahu. It will use A Tradition of Honor and new material featuring GFBNEC's oral histories.
Limited travel assistance stipends for teachers who do not live on Maui are being offered on a first come, first served basis. Information is available from the Go For Broke National Education Center Hawaii Office via email to pam@goforbroke.org and teachers can register at GFBNEC's website, www.goforbroke.org
