(TORRANCE, CALIF., July 14, 2006) – The Go For Broke National Education Center is offering educators a summer professional development workshop through its An American Story Teacher Training Program. The two-day workshop, which will be held on August 19-20 in Little Tokyo, will focus on the segregated fighting forces of World War II through personal experiences of the 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service. The workshop is $25 for two days and provides an optional Continuing Education Unit (CEU) through CSU Dominguez Hills for an additional $40.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Education (FIE), Go For Broke's An American Story workshops help California teachers meet state requirements. In particular, 11th grade high school students in California are required by state curriculum standards to study about segregated military units of World War II, which includes the Japanese American units of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service.

Through the workshop, teachers will learn the history of the 100th/442nd/MIS, and how these stories can open up opportunities for lessons in the classroom. On day one, attendees will explore lessons from Go For Broke's "A Tradition of Honor" teacher's guide and documentary film. The first day will be held at the DISKovery Center Computer Lab, where teachers will get the opportunity to use computers to view online educational resources on www.GoForBroke.org and other interactive lesson applications. Day two of the workshop includes exploring service learning projects based on oral history collection, hearing from a veteran speaker, and touring the Go For Broke Monument and National Center for the Preservation of Democracy.

Educators unable to attend the August workshops can register for other workshops slated this year: San Gabriel Valley, October 7-8; Long Beach, October 21-22; LAUSD-specific Manual Arts High School, October 14-15; and LAUSD-specific Peary DELTA Professional Development Center (Gardena), November 5-6. The Go For Broke National Education Center teaches and preserves the history and legacy of American veterans of Japanese ancestry whose heroism and sacrifices during World War II triumphed over racism and intolerance. This American story focuses on the veteran's core values of honor, duty, patriotism, loyalty, and includes the forced evacuation and incarceration of Japanese Americans and civil liberties issues raised. Currently Go For Broke's programs include An American Story Teacher Training Program, Hanashi Oral History Program, www.GoForBroke.org educational website, and Resource Center at its Little Tokyo office.

In 1989 Japanese American World War II veterans established the 100th/442nd/MIS WWII Memorial Foundation, now the Go For Broke National Education Center, to build the Go For Broke Monument. Today it is an eternal tribute to the heroics of the segregated Japanese American units: 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service (MIS), and the many other men and women who served overseas during World War II. The Monument is located in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles at Temple and Alameda Streets.
