GO FOR BROKE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SEEKS
VOLUNTEERS
Learn New Skills, Make New Friends, Become
A Volunteer And Make A Difference
(TORRANCE, Calif. - May 14, 2003) - The Go For
Broke Educational Foundation relies on volunteer support to sustain
its operations and programs. It currently has a team of outstanding
volunteers but constantly seeks new people who are looking to
help make a difference and ensure the Japanese American WWII veteran
experience is perpetuated.
To orient new volunteers or potential volunteers with the Go
For Broke Educational Foundation and its programs, it will host
a volunteer orientation session on Wednesday, June 25 and Saturday,
June 28, both from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Go For Broke Educational
Foundation office in Torrance. This orientation seeks to attract
volunteers interested in assisting various departments of the
Educational Foundation, including: oral history, multimedia, communications,
special events/outreach program and general office.
Individuals of all ages and skill levels looking to volunteer
in a fun and dynamic office are welcome. University and high school
clubs seeking a group project are also encouraged to volunteer.
Additionally, internship opportunities are currently available
for the summer in the areas of non-profit management/development
and Web development.
The volunteer orientations will include a historical overview
with panelists who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd
Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service. It will
also provide information on the Educational Foundation and its
programs, plus lunch and an optional visit to the Go For Broke
Monument in Little Tokyo. The orientation is open to the public,
but space is limited. RSVP by Friday, June 20, 2003 to Dori Ishiara,
volunteer coordinator at 310-222-5704 or email dori@goforbroke.org.
The Go For Broke Educational Foundation institutes educational
programs focused on the heroism and history of the Japanese American
soldiers of World War II, as well as the forced evacuation and
incarceration of Japanese American and civil liberties issues
raised by those events. Currently the Educational Foundation’s
programs include An American Story teacher training workshops
and curriculum development, Hanashi Oral History Program, and
select media projects. For more information, go to www.GoForBroke.org.
In 1989 Japanese American World War II veterans established the
100th/442nd/MIS WWII Memorial Foundation to build the Go For Broke
Monument as an eternal tribute to the heroics of the segregated
Japanese American units: 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental
Combat Team, MIS (Military Intelligence Service) and the many
other men and women who served overseas during World War II. The
Monument is located in downtown Los Angeles at Temple and Alameda
streets.
