DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR IN OUR HEROES'
FOOTSTEPS NAME ENGRAVINGS AT GO FOR BROKE MONUMENT
All WWII Veteran Family Members And All
Children Under 18 Are Eligible To Have Name Engraved On Go For
Broke Monument Footsteps
(Torrance, Calif., March 18, 2003) - Time still
remains to be included in the first set of In Our Heroes’
Footsteps name engravings at base of the Go For Broke Monument
in Little Tokyo. Name engravings submissions received by April
18 will be unveiled at the “Honoring Our Heroes” Go
For Broke Monument 4th Anniversary Tribute on Saturday, June 14.
This is the opportunity to take an important step to uphold the
World War II veteran legacy and offer a permanent tribute to these
veterans. Because of their uncommon heroism, the Nisei World War
II veterans have helped guarantee that future generations would
not live through the hardships and injustices they endured. As
gratitude, families and the public can help ensure their unwavering
service to America is remembered by purchasing a name engraving
on the footsteps surrounding the Go For Broke Monument.
In Our Heroes’ Footsteps offers ALL direct descendants
of Nisei WWII veterans (siblings, children, nieces/nephews, grandchildren,
direct descendant spouses - regardless of age) the opportunity
to have their names engraved at the base of the Monument. Additionally,
all children, regardless of kinship to a WWII veteran, 18 years
and under can have their names engraved.
Those interested in having a name(s) engraved on the Monument
footsteps can receive a discount by becoming members of the Go
For Broke Educational Foundation. Go For Broke Educational Foundation
membership is $35 for individuals, $25 for veterans and $15 for
students. Premium membership levels start at $100. Cost per engraving
is $250. Go For Broke Educational Foundation members receive a
special $200 per engraving rate. To inquire about membership and
reserving a space on a footstep at the Monument, please call Martie
Quan at 310-222-5702.
Unveiled in June 1999, the Go For Broke Monument has inscribed
on its granite walls 16,126 names of veterans from the 100th Infantry
Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence
Service and others to serve as a reminder of their story, of their
sacrifices and their legendary valor. The purpose of the Go For
Broke Monument is to breathe life into the Nisei WWII veteran
story, and to ensure that injustice and racism never be tolerated
again.
With such symbolism at the core of its existence, the Go For
Broke Educational Foundation is able to carry out its mission
to educate the public of this important part of American history.
By supporting the Go For Broke Educational Foundation, the Go
For Broke Monument, An American Story teacher training workshops,
and the Hanashi Oral History Program can be implemented -- and
the process of educating our children, our future, realized.
The Go For Broke Educational Foundation institutes educational
programs focused on the heroism and history of the Japanese American
soldiers of World War II, as well as the West Coast evacuation
and incarceration of Japanese Americans and civil liberties issues
raised by those events. Currently the Educational Foundation’s
programs include An American Story teacher training workshops
and curriculum development, Hanashi Oral History Program, and
select media projects, including producing “A Tradition
of Honor” documentary. For more information, go to www.goforbroke.org.
In 1989 Japanese American World War II veterans established the
100th/442nd/MIS WWII Memorial Foundation to build the Go For Broke
Monument as an eternal tribute to the heroics of the segregated
Japanese American units: 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental
Combat Team, MIS (Military Intelligence Service) and the many
other men and women who served overseas during World War II. The
monument is located in downtown Los Angeles at Temple and Alameda
streets.
