Message from the Evening of Aloha Chairperson Tammie Kanda

"It will be one of those very special 'I was there!' evenings as we host the first-ever gathering of three distinguished groups of veterans, all recipients of our nation's Congressional Gold Medal," said Tammie Kanda, Evening of Aloha 2011 Chairperson. "The Tuskegee Airmen, Navajo Code Talkers and our Japanese American veterans collectively fought for freedom overseas and for equal rights at home, and are living examples of courage, dignity and patriotism."

"While their historic gathering tops the list of reasons to join us, there are four other great reasons for sponsors and patrons to support this year's event on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel."

Reason #1: It will be an "I Was There!" Evening

It will be a historic evening as previous Congressional Gold Medal awardees, the Tuskegee Airmen and Navajo Code Talkers, congratulate our nation's newest recipients, veterans of the 100th Infantry, 442nd RCT and MIS, at our 10th annual Evening of Aloha gala dinner on Saturday, November 5th.

The Tuskegee Airmen, awardees of the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007, were the first African American aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces. Overcoming prejudice fueled by a 1925 Army report proclaiming African Americans unfit for combat, the Tuskegee Airmen flew escort on bomber missions throughout Europe. Their enviable record of precision and bravery paved the way for the U.S. Air Force to become the first military branch to end racial segregation.

The Navajo Code Talkers served with the US Marines and participated in every major assault in the Pacific Theater using a system of approximately 500 encoded words and phrases of their own design which they committed to memory. During the battle of Iwo Jima, they handled approximately 800 messages without a single error. Although the Japanese Army broke US Army and Navy codes, never once did they break the Navajo code. Approximately 400 Navajo, each one a volunteer, served as code talkers during WWII. When they enlisted, many were not allowed by state laws to vote. The Code Talkers were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2000.

Reason #2: An Evening Filled with Award-Winning Musical Artists

Taking the stage at our Evening of Aloha will be three award-winning entertainers (pictured left to right): Grammy awards winner Daniel Ho, Grammy nominated David Benoit, and multi-platinum songwriter Harold Payne.

Daniel Ho is a six-time Grammy award winner for Best Hawaiian Music Album. David Benoit is a jazz fusion/smooth jazz pianist, composer and producer and five-time Grammy award nominee. Harold Payne is a multi-platinum songwriter with over 100 recordings by acts as diverse as Patti LaBelle; Rod Stewart; Peter, Paul and Mary; and Snoop Dogg.

Reason #3: Luxurious - and Eco-Friendly - 2012 Lexus CT 200h

This year, some lucky winner will be making room in their garage for a brand new 2012 Lexus CT 200h, the first and currently only full hybrid luxury compact on the market. A big "mahalo" to Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., for once again generously donating one of its top vehicles for our Evening of Aloha Opportunity Drawing grand prize.

Proceeds from the Opportunity Draw will help continue GFBNEC's critical educational programs, including teacher training, curriculum development, teen leadership academies, and the Hanashi Oral History Program.

Reason #4: Dream Vacation for Four in St. Lucia Headlines a Great Silent Auction Offering

The premiere silent auction item at this year's Evening of Aloha is a dream vacation for four at the elegant Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort in St. Lucia, West Indies. Valued at $12,717.00, this getaway island trip includes accommodations, airfare, transfers to and from the airport, and a complimentary sunset cruise.

In this Congressional Gold Medal year we're rolling out the red carpet for our veterans by hosting our Evening of Aloha at the legendary Beverly Hilton Hotel.

With nearly 175 red carpet events each year, including the Golden Globe Awards, The Beverly Hilton has long been the place to see and be seen. There are the stars, of course, as well as world leaders and a touch of royalty - the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were there in July for the Variety Venture Capital & New Media Summit.

So join us at the world-famous intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards on Saturday, November 5. The silent auction begins at 5:00 p.m. and the dinner celebration is at 7 p.m.
